Following up on the recent IDC worldwide report, which cited a decline of13.9% in PC shipments globally, IDC believes that Indonesia, while notcompletely impervious to the decline, will prove to be a slight growth market inthe coming years.IDC says that it is indeed seeing the trend of the PC market moving towards flat tonegative growth in countries such as China, India, and ASEAN in general."While the slowdown is a global phenomenon we have to accept as fact, itdoes not necessarily signal the beginning of the end for the PC market inIndonesia," notes Wilhendra Akmam, Research Manager at IDC Indonesia.IDC's research for the Q1 2013 cycle is still ongoing, but based on forecastsfrom the previous cycle growth is expected to be mildly positive for the PCmarket in 2013.Among the reasons for the mild growth in Indonesia is decreasing number ofmini notebooks available in the market. Historically, mini notebooks are a hugepart of the Indonesia PC market, and have had a big contribution to the marketboom over the past 3-4 years. IDC is observing a continued decrease in thenumber of mini notebooks available in the market and we have yet to see a viablereplacement for it.The distraction of new devices such as tablets and smartphones available inthe market also represents a challenge to growth. This means that more devicesare currently competing for the consumer's wallet share.But why is Indonesia still a hot market?Despite the slump in shipments, on a macroeconomic level Indonesia continuesto show solid growth, with FDI rising to record levels in Q4 2012, indicatingthat overall Indonesia is still an attractive economy. IT spending in Indonesiais also forecasted to reach US$15.8B this year alone.Another reason is that demographically, from the years 2010 to 2020,Indonesia is in a demographic bonus stage where up to 70% of the population isin the productive working age. These are people who are the backbone of therising middle economy in Indonesia and will continue to purchase PCs in the nearfuture.Another prominent driver is the under-developed market of eastern Indonesia,which promises huge growth potential if nurtured and approached the right way.Government focus on developing Small Medium Businesses (SMBs) in the easternregions of Indonesia, coupled with investment in infrastructure, will be thedriver of economic growth in future.Though things do look tough for the coming year, IDC believes that Indonesiastill has solid fundamentals and will continue to be a growth market in thefuture.
The global convergent charging market, including software and services, grew42% in 2012 to just under $1.7 billion, with healthy growth expected to continuein 2013, according to a report by Infonetics Research.Ongoing spending slowdowns in beleaguered Western Europe are being counteredby momentum in the rest of Europe, Latin America, and developed countries inAsia Pacific, while full-scale billing transformation projects are few and farbetween, with the majority of deployments occurring as a result of adjunct oroverlay projects."As the rapid ramp-up in data traffic continues to strain the network,operators are looking to better correlate the value of resources consumed to theprice charged," notes Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablementand subscriber intelligence at Infonetics Research."New service and payment models such as hybrid accounts, shared data plans,content packages, and location-based pricing all represent ways for operators todifferentiate themselves while generating more revenue from their networks,"Levine adds. "But the bottleneck is frequently their legacy billing andcharging environments."Ericsson (Telcordia) leads the convergent charging market, followed closelyby Huawei.Infonetics anticipates more replacement activity in the convergent chargingspace as operators rethink their existing solutions, swapping them out oraugmenting them with systems that are more feature-rich, flexible, and scalable.
